The first thing I like to do is take everything out of shelves and pile it all on the floor. I then make three piles: keep, donate, throw out. After I only have the "keep" items in front of me, I divide into what can be worn in the current season and then put away as much as I can so I can have as much closet space as possible. From there, I decide which sections I want for what (ie. a workout shelf, a row of shoes, a pile of school skirts, etc.) and start folding!
If you have been inside my closet, you would know that when it comes to my hanging clothes, I am extremely OCD. We're talking a mini freak out if anyone touches my rack of hangers and messes up the evenly spaced items that I have arranged. Ideally, I would love to have all identical hangers, but a girl can dream right? My advice is to keep only the pieces you are currently wearing on a rack and then organizing by type of shirt (for example button downs, sweaters, etc.) Mine doesn't always end up like that, but it's helpful for dressing for the weather. (P.S. Do you think I like navy and pink at all?!)
Other than that, I recommend cleaning up once a week (or once a day if you can!) so large amounts of clothes don't pile up on the floor. It's so tempting to keep things out after doing laundry or getting home from a trip, but the more you keep up with it all the cleaner your closet will be!

I have always had huge walk-in-closet's growing up, so having to transition to a small closet at my new home with my husband has been super difficult for me! I've taken to rotating clothes that I wear in season at the very front and burying clothes that I don't deep in the sides. My totes and extra purses go up top. I've still got tons of clothes in there that I can't and don't wear anymore, so if you have any tips on how to motivate myself to get rid of some of those old favorites, I would appreciate it!

Love this! My greatest thing I have done in my closet is to get 2 Lilly storage totes and put out-of-season clothes in one and my sweatshirts in the other. It saves so much space (and hangers) in my closet!

I'm the type of person who goes on cleaning binges at four in the mourning because I can't sleep. During the summer, this means my closet is spic and span. I usually organize the things hanging up by style (short sleeve, running shirts, dressy shirts, etc.) then by color in rainbow order. It helps a lot when I'm trying to decide what I want to wear.

I am so guilty of being a bit anal when it comes to my closet and organization. I have to have my hanging clothes color coordinated, it takes a little bit to get used to doing, but is so worth it :)
