If you can't pronounce it, don't eat it!

One of the best parts of having good friends who are as health conscious as me is trading tips and tricks for what to eat and what not to eat. Now I'm not talking about never treating yourself to ice cream or donuts (we all know that is definitely necessary once and a while), but smaller things like an alternative to a fatty dressing or a delicious smoothie addition. One of my best friends is probably the healthiest person I know so you can imagine I soak up tons of food and fitness ideas from her (just the other day she forced me to do a core workout with her in my basement, bless her heart ;). She's shared so many helpful tips with me, but one that resonates with me the most is that if you don't know what it is or can't pronounce it, then you shouldn't eat it. I'm not talking about a fancy french pastry or type of sushi, but a chemical that is listed under the ingredients on the back of a box. For example, on the back of a soda can, a few ingredients include ester gum, yellow 5, malic acid, calcium disodium edta and sodium citrate among several other strange chemicals. Chances are, if you can't pronounce it and don't know what it is, don't eat it! It's as simple as that! I've really started living by this mantra and have been reading ingredients to be more aware of what I'm eating.

Do you have any mantras when it comes to what you eat?
If you're interested, Food Rules is a great book to read with some other quick tips!
