How I Met My Best Friends in College

As a little break from all of the excitement of the holiday season, I thought I would get a little more personal and talk about some college related things that I've been reflecting on since finishing my first semester. I'll have an entire "What I Learned First Semester" post up soon, but until then, here's how I met my best friends!

Meeting friends in college was one of my biggest fears about the entire experience because at a school with 40,000 people, how do you know who are going to be your lifelong friends?! It definitely helped having a roommate who is super similar to me because we like the same kinds of people, so we were able to make friends together, especially in the beginning of the semester when we pretty much knew no one. Oddly enough, the way we met our two groups of friends was literally by talking to people on the side of the road... not as sketchy as it sounds I promise! Here's a little story time for you...

The third week after moving into school, my roomie Caroline and I were walking to a clubs fair down the street from our residence hall. It was about 10000 degrees outside and we were dying in our chino shorts and button downs (it was a business clubs fair, so we had to look somewhat professional of course :). As we were walking down, a guy behind us overheard our conversation about the fair and asked if we could show him where it was. Not really thinking much of it, we showed him where to go. We talked for a little bit and he asked if he could "have one of the Caroline's numbers so we could hang out some time". Caroline and I thought it was pretty funny but still didn't think much of it because we had met so many people in those first three weeks. The next day, he texted us and asked if we wanted to grab dinner with him and his friend that night. Confused as to whether it was a double date or not, we ended up bringing the boys to a jersey themed party with some girls we knew and clearly we must have gotten along well because we have been hanging out every weekend since! It was the most random run in ever, but it's crazy to think that if we hadn't met him on the side of the road that one day, we wouldn't have made so many incredible memories together. We all agree that we've gotten as close as (if not closer) best friends that have known each other for 2 or 3 years in just one semester. I seriously don't know what life would be like without our little boy squad!

Then for our girl friends, we literally all became bffs by bonding over our Sunday night bootcamp workout class. Caroline met a girl on the way to her 9 am class, and they decided to get a bunch of us together to do a workout class. After a few classes, we became super good friends, started grabbing dinner together and the rest is history! One of the best parts has been that we've been able to experience Indiana's crazy basketball games together since we bought our seats in a row. Because two of them live a floor above us and the guys all live 2 floors above us, we're together 24/7 and have been able to merge our two little groups. It was all so coincidental how we met each other, and as cliche as it sounds, I don't know what I would do without all of the people that made first semester so fun and special!

Even though I'm so excited for sorority recruitment in January, it will definitely be weird not being able to be with these people every weekend. That's the thing about college - things change every semester with new experiences, classes and activities. But, I can tell that I'll be friends with everyone I met first semester for a long time, regardless of what sorority and fraternity we all end up in!

How did you meet your friends in college?
I'm really feeling these more personal college posts right now - would you guys want to see more?

  1. Loved this post! I'm a junior in high school right now and one of my fears of going far out of state for college is meeting new people. It's reassuring to hear that there are so many people just willing to talk out of the blue and become friends! I'd love to see a best friend tag with them sometime soon!!!
