Eat 80/20

Whenever I tell people (or myself for that matter) that I'm "going on a cleanse", it usually lasts a total of 2 days, if that, before I start craving sugar and treat myself to ice cream or chips. As a teenager in the summertime, it's quite difficult to cut out every unhealthy thing in your diet, especially if your friends are like mine and make fun of you when you say you don't want any ice cream on your late night runs :) I think I originally heard this idea in one of Bobbi Brown's beauty books, but what has been working for me as of late is to eat 80/20, or 80% healthy and 20% non-healthy. When you do this, you focus on maintaining a more nutritious lifestyle rather than embarking on a "fad diet" that you are guaranteed to break after a short period of time. Plus, you can treat yourself once and a while to ice cream or a cookie and not feel bad about it since you have been consistently eating better.

After doing this for a few days, I honestly feel better, my skin clears up and I crave more fruits and veggies than ever!

Here's an example of a typical day of eating 80/20 for me:

Breakfast:
Cherry Chobani yogurt, berries and granola

Lunch:
Whole wheat toast with turkey, cheese and lettuce on top, a piece of fruit and a few chips

Snack:
Blue tortilla chips (not too bad for you!) with guacamole or some SkinnyPop

Dinner:
Grilled chicken, peppers and rice

Dessert:
A little bit of froyo with fruit (sometimes a few m&ms on top too :)

Doesn't sound too bad right?!
Have you heard of this 80/20 philosophy before?

  1. Love this! I tend to go a bit overboard during summer especially when on vacation but when I get home I'll need to get into a routine like this!

  3. Successful diets are all about moderation so I think the 80/20 concept is perfect! If you want to make your snacks even healthier Terra veggie chips or fresh baby sweet peppers are both delicious!

  4. Oh my goodness that is such a good idea! I try and eat as healthy as I can, but then again I love my chocolate and french fries (not together though, haha!) Sometimes I'm a little too loose on all the junk food I let myself eat so this is a great idea to keep some balance. I was just wondering if you mind that I do a post similar to this on my blog too? Thanks for sharing!

  5. This is what I typically try to do, but in the summertime it's so hard! I definitely envy you for being able to do this consistently :)
